About the Adviser: Ashley Stone (Part 1 of 2)

I have been a member of Scarlet Guard since I joined in fall 2011 during my freshman year. Since, I have been a member of the Scarlet Guard Board of Directors for three years, a member of the SG Executive team for two, and have served as the 2014-2015 President since April of 2014. There are many advantages to being involved with such an outstanding organization, but one in particular is the daily inspiration that I get from working alongside Scarlet Guard Adviser, Ashley Stone.
Stone joined the Scarlet Guard team in 2013 as the graduate assistant adviser. While she finished her Master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she worked alongside more than 1,400 Scarlet Guard members to enhance their college experience. In June of 2014, Scarlet Guard’s adviser of 5 years left her role at the Nebraska Alumni Association, and Ashley became the interim adviser of Scarlet Guard. I have had the incredible pleasure of getting to know Ashley over the past one and a half years, and have witnessed her passion for fostering leadership in others, commitment to providing students with the tools for success, and her genuine desire to provide support to the students in Scarlet Guard.
In spring of 2014, Ashley participated in a Scarlet Guard focus group with eight current and previous Scarlet Guard Board of Directors members and the past Scarlet Guard adviser.  Ashley led discussion about the future and longevity of Scarlet Guard while always considering what was best for the organization and its members. She took charge of the development of a new Board of Directors structure, modified programming, and a new mission statement for Scarlet Guard.
Ashley’s true persistence and dedication to Scarlet Guard was undeniable in the months following the resignation of Scarlet Guard’s previous adviser. She took challenges head on, and entered her current position with numerous ideas about how to increase engagement and membership within Scarlet Guard. Some of the changes that Ashley has spearheaded is the implementation of the new Board of Directors structure, a rejuvenated focus on member recognition, providing leadership and networking training to the Board of Directors, and the restructure of Scarlet Guard’s professional development event, Backpacks and Briefcases.
While Ashley has made a great impact serving Scarlet Guard and the Nebraska Alumni Association, what truly makes her the best adviser is her unyielding service to the individuals within the organization. The past six months, I have been fortunate enough to witness Ashley foster leadership and success in countless Scarlet Guard members, including myself. Ashley’s compassion, selflessness, and faith in others have been the driving force behind Scarlet Guard’s success this year. She has supported the Board of Directors’ shift to a completely student-run board. Instead of acting as the leader of the organization, Ashley has instead put her faith in us, coached us, giving them the opportunity to take pride and ownership of their own leadership within Scarlet Guard.

I can never thank Ashley enough for the support and kindness she has showed me individually, and she will never know the breadth of my appreciation for the leadership values and life skills she has instilled in me. Stories of Ashley’s impact on students’ lives are not rare; she inspires all who she interacts with, and that is why she is the best adviser Scarlet Guard could possibly have.

Alumni Masters Week: A Real-Life Advantage

Last week, all Scarlet Guard members had the opportunity to not only listen in on the Alumni Masters Week Success Panel, but also network and interact more intimately with the masters at luncheons in the Wick Alumni Center.

In the past, I had never been particularly excited about Alumni Masters Week because there hadn't been a master who really matched my interests and career goals since I came to UNL. I always attended the Success Panel to take advantage of the masters' more generic wisdom, but secretly dreaded luncheons because I feared I wouldn't know what to talk to the master I sat with about.

This year, things were different. Angie Klein, VP of Marketing and Sales for Verizon in Manhattan and College of Journalism and Mass Communications alumna, was a master. I had heard Angie talk to my JOMC 101 class when I was an underclassmen, and was excited to hear from her again. Not only was she just a generally impressive human being, but I knew that she would have information that was relevant to me and my future career.

I spoke with Angie briefly following Wednesday's Success Panel and again at Thursday evening's Medallion Dinner, but it wasn't until the Friday luncheon that I got some real, personal, and effective advice from Angie.

Earlier that week, I had been going through the interview process for three different advertising internships. I had multiple offers on the table, but was struggling with making a decision and picking which one would be the best fit for me. Immediately following the luncheon with Angie, I was scheduled to meet with one of the agencies that had offered me a position. It was at the agency that was my top choice for experience, but there was a question of pay which had me doubting if it was the right fit.

I explained to Angie what position I was in and voiced my concerns. When I made a point of how I was nervous to potentially negotiate pay, I was surprised to see Angie laughing a little.
"You know why you're nervous about that right? It's because your a girl, and it's been engrained in you that if you are telling someone how good you are, you're hurting someone else's feelings. As someone who has interviewed thousands of people and who has negotiated pay with people many times, I'll tell you that not once, not once, has a man come into my office, asked for more money, and felt bad about it."

It wasn't new news that women are so often paid less than their male counterparts, but I was surprised at the fact that it was something I didn't even realize was affecting my confidence in asking for pay that I deserved.

After the luncheon, I went to the agency. After my meeting there (including a chat with one of the agency owners), I left not only with my top choice internship, but a pay I felt I deserved, and gratitude towards Angie for giving me a pep-talk that made me confident enough to make it happen.

Having the chance to hear from prestigious alumni is great, but feeling comfortable enough to milk the opportunity for all it's worth and to initiate authentic interactions with alumni is one of the more rewarding aspects of being a part of Scarlet Guard.

Event Recap: Alumni Masters Week

This week, prestigious alumni masters from each college came back to network with current UNL students. The masters participated in a Success Panel and dessert reception Wednesday night. The event was open to all current UNL students, and over 200 were in attendance. The masters shared their thoughts on civic engagement, leadership, networking, and finding your passion.
Thursday and Friday, Scarlet Guard students were invited to have lunch with the masters and network in a more intimate setting.
Thursday night, the 2014 masters joined 50 previous masters at the Alumni Masters Week Medallion Dinner. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Alumni Masters Week. Masters past and present joined together at Innovation Campus to celebrate their time at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Tradition Tuesday: The Cornhusker Compass

As part of Scarlet Guard’s mission to give students the Ultimate Husker Experience, all members receive the Cornhusker Compass when they register. The Compass is a small customizable booklet that highlights 65 campus traditions of UNL. Traditions include a variety of activities, landmarks, and events in five different areas: campus life, academics, athletics, culture and giving back.

When students complete traditions, they put documentation of the event (a picture, ticket stub, etc.) on the corresponding page of the Cornhusker Compass, making the Compass a customizable yearbook. After members complete 25 traditions, they are recognized as a Scarlet Guard Knight. From that point on, they are invited to an annual and exclusive SG Knights appreciation event and receive a Scarlet Guard Knights lapel pin. Once members complete 50 of the 65 traditions, they become an Official Tradition Keeper, are invited to the annual Alumni Awards Banquet with prestigious alumni and University of Nebraska staff, and receive a medal to wear at graduation.

In order to help students get involved and complete these traditions, Scarlet Guard hold 15 events throughout the year. Some, like Dodgeball in Memorial Stadium, Alumni Masters Week, and Backpacks and Briefcases are traditions in the Compass. Others, like the Ultimate Cornhusker Compass Competition, helps promote other campus traditions and organizes a way for Scarlet Guard members to complete them together.

Another way to help promote Compass traditions that aren’t Scarlet Guard events is by utilizing “Traditions Tuesday”. Traditions Tuesday is a social media campaign started by this year’s Vice President of Social Media, Michaela Niemeyer. Every Tuesday, a post about Cornhusker Compass traditions happening currently goes out on all social media platforms.

There have been 3 different versions of the Cornhusker Compass, as new campus traditions are always popping up.

Event Recap: BEAT Rutgers T-shirts

Each year, Scarlet Guard gives away a limited number of BEAT shirts before 4 home conference football games. This year, we made a slight change. There were two football BEAT shirts, and next semester there will be a basketball BEAT shirt and a softball/baseball BEAT shirt.

Last Friday, SG Board of Directors members handed out our first-ever BEAT Rutgers t-shirts.

Scarlet Guard members lined up hours in advance in front of the Nebraska Union on City Campus to await the BEAT shirt giveaway. While waiting, some visiting Rutgers fans even came to say hello and complimented the shirts! Over 130 Scarlet Guard members received the t-shirts and they must've brought the Huskers some good luck- we beat Rutgers 42-24!

This year's BEAT shirts were designed by this year's SG Vice President of Communications, Sean Johnson. Sean is a senior Art major from Columbus, Nebraska.

The Scarlet Guard Board of Directors

The Scarlet Guard Board of Directors is the governing body of SG, comprised of approximately 35 students. Members of the board are chosen through a selective application and interview process in the early spring semester each school year. Board members help plan Scarlet Guard events, promote the organization, provide member benefits and serve as the link between the student body and the alumni association. All Board of Directors members are required to attend bi-weekly meetings, participate in various planning committees, and help at all Scarlet Guard events.

Board meetings are completely student-run. All agenda topics are led by members of the Executive Team, committee directors, or students who serve as connections to other organizations on campus. At each meeting, one Board member who has gone above and beyond since the previous meeting is given the "Support Award", a tool belt that the recipient decorates with something that symbolizes them or their experiences with Scarlet Guard.

As part of the new Board of Directors/Executive team structure this year, for the first time ever, there are four freshman included on the Board of Directors. In the past, BOD spots were held exclusively by upperclassmen. Because most of Scarlet Guard's general members are freshmen, the organization decided it was important that we gave the freshmen a voice at our Board meetings.

Once one is accepted onto the Board of Directors, their spot is secure for the rest of their Scarlet Guard membership, pending they meet all BOD attendance and involvement requirements. Board members can run for Executive team positions the year following their acceptance on to BOD.

While the Board of Directors is comprised of hardworking leaders that focus on event planning and programming, it is also a very tight-knit group of friends. Members like to organize "Board Bonding" outings after meetings and events. The relationships built with fellow Board members is just as much of a perk as the real-world professional development experience.
